Dreaming of the Sea

beautyNavigate with StyleComment

Thoughts of being at the beach, floating in the ocean, eating lobster rolls, showering outside and twirling on the low tide flats spin around and around in my head every day. This is partly why I created FoxSea - to transform my love of all things nautical into my work, thereby ensuring the beach, and everything that goes with it, stays fresh in my mind at all times. The fact FoxSea has resonated with others is such a thrill for me, and I want to continue to share the products and the brand, so others can feel like they’re at the beach too - whether on a cold winter’s morning in Duluth or a spring day spent inside a classroom in Ohio.

Last month, I put together a little package of FoxSea goodies and left it in downtown Fort Wayne for someone to find. It was so fun to dream of who might find the package (and hopefully fall in love with the products) that I plan to do many more. I might even drop a few during my various travels, to spread the good word, as they say.

We’re not all lucky enough to live near a coastline, but we can all pretend to be for a moment with a fresh and healthy scent, skin nourishing oils and the cutest little anchor adorned bottle.

S L O W beauty

I saw one of my fave skincare brands, Rodin Olio Lusso, post recently about the concept of slow beauty and it resonated with me so completely, so deeply. First off, I’ve loved and been inspired by Linda Rodin and her range of oils since she launched the brand in 2007 (as an EA to a beauty/style CEO, I was lucky enough to be exposed to Rodin, as well as receive some samples, in the brand’s infancy). Linda’s approach to beauty is chic and simple, and an oil based beauty routine has become central to my personal care habits, as well as my whole life, as founder of my own teensy oil (and salt) based skincare brand. While Linda herself is no longer involved in Rodin (the brand was purchased by Estee Lauder), her elevated, streamlined skincare range is still inspiring me.

So, #slowbeauty. What does that mean? In trying to answer this question for myself, I went down a bit of a rabbit hole, reading about the Slow Movement in general, flipping back through Chasing Slow by Erin Loechner, then stumbling into the Business of Fashion podcast episode about Ayurveda - something I plan to explore further, forever and ever. As far as I can tell, the idea of slow beauty in particular came from the founder of nail care line, Spa Ritual, Shel Pink (yes, that’s her real, and kickass, name). She defines the slow beauty movement as being “a story of sustainable self-love and self-care.”

Fab. Go on…

The Slow Beauty movement is the antithesis of the fast-paced world of the beauty industry that sells us quick fixes, immediate results and invasive options.  This outdated perspective has us racing against time, and fighting against aging.  The Slow Beauty philosophy, a balance between expansiveness and restriction - a middle way, explores the big ideas of growing young, the spiritualization of beauty, and practicing a renewed feminism, reframing our ideas and ideals about beauty.
— Shel Pink

Love it.

So, for me personally, this also jives with my less is more approach to beauty. And to be honest, I’m trying to apply that philosophy to every aspect of my life. I want less and less as I get older (except handbags - I want all of those). But to stick with the beauty/personal care category, here’s what’s rattling around in my head. First off, “less is more” is right in line with the lazy aspect of my personality. I could never have an intense face of makeup on a daily basis - I just don’t want to do the work AND it’s not the aesthetic I enjoy for myself. I’m also intensely afraid of needles and cannot imagine a time when I’d opt for injections, fillers or cosmetic surgery, so I’ll always choose prevention over intervention. My goal is to age gracefully and naturally, with toxin-free products that make me feel luxurious - it’s a nice bonus that I can make my own.

I also really enjoy rituals, so taking the time to care for my skin is almost a form of therapy, rather than a slap dash removal of dirt and makeup. Oil cleansing, followed by rolling serums into the skin, applying creams with light massage, inhaling beautiful essential oils, and being kind to myself in the form of positive thoughts, rather than tearing myself down for not being thin, poreless and perfect, are all things I strive to accomplish during my morning and evening skincare routines.

I think slowing down makes everything feel a little more intentional, more special. I’m worth slowing down for, and if the process of doing so is inspired by my slow beauty skincare routine, wonderful.

Thoughts about slow beauty? Please share with me!

Behind the Scenes

beautyNavigate with StyleComment

I was going to write Behind the SEAnes up there but then thought that might be too cute. Anyway — last weekend I got together with a fantastic photog + two (and a half) models, all willing to help me get a portfolio of profesh FoxSea photos together. I’ll start using the jaw droppingly beautiful images very soon, but in the meantime, here’s a peek behind the scenes of our fun little photo shoot.

Part of the lineup of products, accessories and nautical decor accents. My yellow Gloucesterman in drag made it into quite a few shots - which I LURVE.

I’m beyond thrilled to have worked with these ladies (and that baby gent) to bring a new dimension to FoxSea’s digital presence. I feel lucky to know so many creative ladies who are up for collaboration! Hashtag blessed. #GetFoxSea

Gone FoxSea-ing

I’ve been a busy maker over here these last few weeks…

I started playing around with some looks for an event promo, and really enjoyed the freshness of the crisp and bold color. Perhaps I’ll take it further and do a bit of a makeover one of these days.

With a larger than normal slate of orders and upcoming events, I needed to produce bigger batches of product. My husband is such a gem, and he helped me tackle the labeling - which is not fun.

I’ve been lacking a little in the swag department, so I whipped up some new pins (#SaltyLady) and made some business card samples, so I could share Universal Oil with potential new fans. Fingers crossed…

My Herbal Lip Balm is back, because it’s that chapped lip time of year everyone loves so much. It always surprises me how much people ask for this product, which I initially started offering as a promotional item.

I was asked to create something for a local company’s holiday client appreciation gifts, so I bottled Universal Oil in a small rollerball for the first time then decided to add it to my regular stock offerings! #FoxSeaOnTheGo

I love a good bath, as does my smallest human. I really dig the ritual of a nice bath, so I teamed up with a local candle maker to help me create the first ever FoxSea bath candle. This first batch isn’t exactly what I want (not a reflection of my candle partner, but my own issues) but it’s got tons of potential! Stay tuned…

This summer I decelerated, both with FoxSea ish + my freelance writing, which is the great part about being freelance. However, it took me a bit to get back up to speed and I’m not sure I can sustain another deceleration. This busy last quarter of 2018 has reenergized me and I’m excited to keep up the pace!

Whew!

Face Palm

beautyNavigate with StyleComment

I know I’m always going on and on about using clean skincare, and I do so because there are so many compelling reasons why it’s important. I believe simple, clean, minimal skincare is best, and if you can incorporate freshly made products into your routine, even better! Reading labels is key to knowing what you’re absorbing through your skin as well as ingesting from your packaged foods. I’m getting in your face today about discontinuing the use of palm oil.

Currently, it’s used in so many consumer products, and its popularity is killing the orangutans. Palm oil is found in approximately half of the products found in grocery stores, like frozen foods and margarine as well as personal care products like soaps, candles, cosmetics and household cleaners. And it’s not always easy to see it written on the label, because there are so many alternative names for the ingredient:

Read more about the issue from the experts, because I’m definitely not one of them:

The Effects of Palm Oil

Palm Oil Producers Wiping Out Orangutans

Sir Richard Branson: The Race to Save One of the World’s Most Pristine Ecosystems

Simple and clean living is great for you AND the sweet orangutans, who don’t have a voice in this fight or their future. It will take even more effort in reading labels, and we’re bound to slip up here and there, but if palm oil products start becoming less popular, an alternative will be found. Money talks, as we all know too well.

I'm a pretty terrible salesperson but I do wholeheartedly believe in the products I make. Behold a sales pitch below, with product recs from other skincare lines, because including them makes me feel better about tooting my own horn so blatantly.

Transitional weather is here, which means it's time to make some tweaks to your skincare regime. Keep that summer glow going with the right mix of healthy beauty oils.

* As the temps start to dip (they'll dip eventually, right?), switch from gel or foaming cleansers to a cream or oil variety. FoxSea Universal Oil can be used as a cleansing oil, or try Burt's Bees Facial Cleansing Oil, which gently removes the dirt and makeup of the day without stripping skin bare.

* The eye area is among the most delicate, and wacky weather can parch the area quickly. An oil serum can do a deep dive to help combat the fine lines and wrinkles that can age a face in a snap. Eye Eye, Captain is my personal fave, but Little Barn Apothecary makes an excellent version, available here.

* A nighttime facial oil is a must for waking up with glowing skin, and is the perfect last layer in an evening regime, because it helps to seal in what was applied before. FoxSea Eternal Oil is an ultra nourishing option, thanks to a super group, if you will, of natural oils known for soothing and moisturizing.

Okay, that wasn't so bad, I guess...

GO BUY SOME FOXSEA!

FoxSea: Eye Eye, Captain

beauty, funNavigate with StyleComment

I'm so excited to announce FoxSea Skin's latest launch: Eye Eye, Captain! Formulated with a blend of healthy, natural oils, this serum helps keep fine lines and wrinkles at bay. While it's suitable for morning and evening, play around with how much you apply, and how long you let it sink it, prior to applying makeup. I spend many of my days makeup free, and drenched in FoxSea oils, so I have zero issues applying it in the morning. I also dab a little into my brows and on the tips of my lashes, since the castor oil in the formula can encourage hair growth (I over waxed my brows in the 90's). As always, when dealing with the eye area, be gentle, don't tug and take care not to get the product in your eyes. #safetyfirst

I haven't launched a new product in a while so I wanted Eye Eye, Captain to get a little fanfare before hitting the shelves. I threw a teeny private party to help fete the slim vial of skincare gold, and it was so lovely to get the product into the hands of other creative women I admire. Owning a small business that focuses on small batch, handmade goods is no joke, and support from the maker community (both local and at large) means so much to me.

Take a peek through the evening and then order what's sure to be your next beauty crush (fingers and toes crossed) online from The FIND

Thank you to everyone who helped me celebrate Eye Eye, Captain.

You float my boat!

Glow Your Own Way

Natural beauty oils are the closest thing we have to a fountain of youth. I assume most people are already well aware and are using beauty oils, but just in case...

Nothing adds a youthful lustre to skin quite like a quality beauty oil. Pure plant based oils can be great for all skin types, including oily (nothing cuts oil like oil). From tackling fine lines and wrinkles, and soothing environmental effects to adding a healthy sheen to skin morning and night, the right beauty oil is hands down the MVP of any skincare squad.

If you haven't been using a quality beauty oil, for crying out loud, right the wrong by jumping on the bandwagon straight away. Obviously, I'm a fan of my FoxSea Skin oils, but there are so many fab options on the market, and at every price point.

FoxSea Skin options include the best selling Universal Oil, which now also comes in gold and rose gold shimmer varieties for extra pizzazz, as well as Eternal Facial Oil, a soothing balm (especially great in colder months) and will soon include Eye Eye, Captain - the yet to be launched under eye serum.  FoxSea's distribution is small, for sure, but I hope to get a digital store opened sometime this year. #goals

When shopping for yours, be sure to select a pure, truly natural product, eschewing those with cheap additives and fillers, unnecessary chemicals and the like.

Easy Come, Easy Glow

Pure, plant-based oils are skin loving gifts from nature. These golden elixirs add moisture, plus a light, healthy sheen, and can be an essential part of any skin type's skincare regimen.

FoxSea began with one product, what has come to be known as Universal Oil. This is my go-to, multitasking product - my desert island pick. It can be used on face, body and hair (use sparingly from mid-shaft through ends) for incredible moisture, can be added to a bath for an extra skin softening boost, used in dry clay mask preparations and even as an oil cleanser.

From there, the next oil product I made became what I call Eternal Oil, specifically for the face, for skin that needs a little extra attention on fine lines and wrinkles.

Next came the Soothing Balm, a soft solid version (of sorts) of Universal Oil. It has a small cult following at this point, with fans raving about its ability to help tackle eczema (I can't technically make this claim, but I sure as hell can repeat the feedback I've heard). It's great for the dry winter months, fab as a cuticle cream, on elbows and heels, and in a very small amount, used on dry ends. I also use it to protect under eye skin when I go hiking with my family in colder months and apply a smidge of it around my nostrils when flying (read this).

Then, after lots of testing, I launched Gilded Universal Oil, a lightly shimmering body oil. Golden mica + best selling Universal Oil = glow getting body skin staple. I've also created a Rose Gold version, that adds a bit more color while remaining subtle (no OTT J. Lo glow here).

Finally, I'm getting ready to add my obsession worthy under eye serum I'm calling Eye Eye, Captain. A little goes a long way, and the oil nourishes skin and tackles the fine lines and wrinkles of our most delicate skin. I've been testing this out on myself (and a few friends) and I've gotten rave reviews so far. I can't wait to launch this baby...

These five (FIVE! My fave.) oils are essentials for me, and I hope you fall in love with them. While FoxSea is not a comprehensive, clinical range (and it never will be), it can enhance and augment any skincare routine with simplicity and a bit of luxury. #treatyoself

I always love hearing constructive criticism (ok, I may not love it, but I understand the need to hear it) and heaps and heaps of praise, so please reach out and tell me what you dig, what you'd like to see next and how you #GetFoxSea!

Full Steam Ahead

beautyNavigate with StyleComment

One of my very favorite FoxSea Skin products is the Herbal Facial Steam. The current mix is organic lavender and lemon peel, a fragrant and therapeutic combo I happen to love. It doesn't hurt that the mix looks beautiful in the jar, to boot.

Indulging in a proper steam allows a scrub, mask or nourishing oil to penetrate more deeply. A gentle yet effective steam can help boost circulation, loosen and unclog pores, hydrate skin and promote a healthy glow. The aromatic experience is also great for the senses and a perfect antidote to the frigid temps outside.

Here's how to give yourself a lovely little steam at home:

Fill a medium-sized pot halfway with water and bring to a low boil then remove from stove. Pour into a heat-resistant bowl and place on a stable, flat surface (kitchen table or island is best, or wherever you can sit and be comfortable during the steam). Add a handful of herbs to the water and allow to steep for one minute. Using a large towel, fully tent your head to capture the steam while positioning your face a few inches above the bowl. The steam should feel comfortable, not too hot. Steam for 5 - 10 minutes, depending on comfort level. Rinse skin with cool water, gently pat dry then finish with normal skincare regime. If you’re really in a DIY spa mood, after steaming, apply your favorite mask then finish with your normal skincare regime.

While I have yet to offer online shopping on the FoxSea website, stockists Idlehour and The FIND/The Trove are more than happy to take phone orders. Or, try Skin Owl's Beauty Steam or Fig & Yarrow Herbal Steams, available for purchase online.

Peace, love and organic skincare! OMG, so cheesy but I'm leaving it in.

Shimmer and shine, like the magical mermaid you are, with FoxSea Skin's Gilded Universal Oil. This golden elixir hydrates dry skin with the nourishing, natural oils and therapeutic essential oil blend found in the best-selling Universal Oil, but with a dose of metallic shimmer for a healthy, beautiful sheen.

I took my sweet-ass time formulating this product. I struggled because in the bottle, it looks pretty OTT. I wasn't sure if customers would be wary of that much shimmer or would be disappointed if it didn't look the same on their skin as it did in the bottle. What I really wanted was a light, subtle shimmer, a sheen that's barely detectable and that's what I got. I hope you like it just as much as I do.

It looks fab-u-lous on all skin tones, especially on (responsibly) sun-kissed skin. I took a bottle with me on vacation and really enjoyed the oohs and aahs of friends and family who tried it, especially my sweet 6 year old niece.

Gilded Universal Oil is currently exclusively available at Idlehour Boutique - and they ship.

Come to Middle Waves and get glowing with a complementary application of Gilded Universal Oil + a golden temporary tattoo for even more pizzazz, if you're into that sort of thing.

Sea Fresh

beautyNavigate with StyleComment

You may not reside on a coast but that doesn't mean you can't pretend to when it comes to your Summer beauty regime. With ingredients like sea salt and marine extracts, these fab products bring the seaside right to you. Here's my round up of new faves that will make you feel as fresh as an outdoor shower after a day at the beach, no matter where you live.

Sachajuan's line is expertly formulated but I must admit that I'm easily won over by their minimalist packaging as well. I love R+Co's Sail Soft Wave Spray because it adds that piece-y texture we're all after but without the crunch or stickiness of other brands.

I'm an absolute sucker for anything sea salt. Ahava's innovative Liquid Dead Sea Salt is a fantastic way to exfoliate the body, effectively yet gently. I adore nearly the entire Mario Badescu line, especially the Seaweed Cleansing Soap, which contains bits of anti-inflammatory seaweed and is great for removing makeup as well as cleansing.

Thalgo Ultra Hydra-Marine Mask instantly plumps, soothes and hydrates facial skin in mere minutes - great for your post-sun, post-swim routine. The next best thing to swimming among seaweed in the ocean is taking a luxurious bath in The Organic Pharmacy's Detoxifying Seaweed Bath Soak.

So Fresh!

Bonus, zero dollar, Summer beauty tip: Stash as many of your beauty products as you can fit in the fridge for extra cooling applications. I store eye cream, fragrance, body oil and facial mist in mine. Perhaps when I renovate my master bath, I'll carve out a space for a little dorm fridge. #nextlevel

Salty.

beauty, funNavigate with StyleComment

Well, it's been one year since I officially launched FoxSea Skin. I've learned a ton (and still have so much MORE to learn) and have so many more goals to meet. I have high hopes for this little side hustle of mine. While I don't intend to take over the world with my salty little biz, I sure would love to spend all of my days playing with these pink salts while providing a lovely and safe little universe for my family. Here's to making a dream a full time job!

Cheers to year #2 and beyond!
