cancer services...

Indiana, give back, hair, inspirationNavigate with StyleComment
I was recently given the opportunity to tour a very special place here in Ft. Wayne, Indiana.  Cancer Services is a not for profit organization that helps those affected by cancer "by providing individual support, durable medical equipment, information, transportation, health supplies, financial assistance, complementary care and support groups."  It's an amazing organization and one that deserves a ton of community support since I've yet to meet anyone who has not been affected by cancer...

In addition to the multitude of services and support offered, Cancer Services provides complimentary body massages and wigs to their clients.  I was absolutely stunned when I walked into the wig room - there are so many options, including head wraps and hats.  The loss of hair during cancer treatment can add tons of worry to an already stressful experience.  Plus, wigs can be very expensive to own and maintain.  Cancer Services allows their clients two wigs at a time and they can be switched out if they want to try something new.  A volunteer helps to maintain the wigs and as well as fit the clients so they leave with a look they can love during a very difficult time.

Check out all the services and support offered by Cancer Services here.  Consider volunteering, making a donation or participating in an event sponsored by Cancer Services to help support this very noble and important Ft. Wayne organization.

fall makeup trends and tips...

INsight, Indiana, beauty, cosmetics, fall/winter, fun and games, hair, me, media, sunnies, workworkworkNavigate with StyleComment
Today on INsight the ladies and I discussed the trends for makeup and hair this season.  Check out the clips below!

Fall Make Up Trends - I love Charity's quote about painting the barn...hilarious!  I'd love to say I leave the house looking super glam everyday but that just isn't the case.  When I don't put on my face (as my grandmother says) I opt for a luminizing moisturizer for a subtle glow...but I NEVER leave without sunglasses...NEVER!

Eye & Hair Trends - I love a chignon but always need help doing it myself...Click here to buy or here for detailed usage.  Check out the complete range from Butter London...one of my very favorite beauty brands EVER! Click here for the mascara I presented on air by CoverGirl but for my navy colored mascara pick of the season click here

Lip & Cheek Trends - I am so into a red lip this fall (and nearly every fall) but Tarte's Natural Lip Tint is my new favorite.  Stila Convertible Color compacts are must haves for me...I adore all the colors for both lips and cheeks (and in some cases eyes).

Friday's Five Favorites...cringe inducing salon names!

FFF, fail, fun and games, hairNavigate with Style1 Comment
What's in a name?  I've run across "cute" names for hair salons over the years and most don't give me much confidence in the quality of their work (totally judging a book by its cover, I know).  Some do make me chuckle...a bit.  The top 5 cringe-y names:

5. Curl Up & Dye - ok, pretty clever...but it makes me think of grey perms...'nuff said.
4. Hair Lair - this one makes me a bit itchy.
3. On Purpose Hair - huh?  Is the end result so bad you have to explain to people that your 'do is on purpose?
2. Hair Today, Hair Tomorrow - I mean...?
1. Clippety Do Dah! - inspired by Yankee Doodle Scissors from the TV show Wings?

elastigirl...

I'm always on the lookout for great hair elastics...I typically go for Blax clear 2mm bands but since moving to the Midwest they are a bit harder to find.

I've tried all varieties available at big box stores, beauty supply outlets and drugstores but today I spied a new version by scunci.

They're kind of like the jelly bracelets from my 80's youth (or today's emo set)...stay tuned for notes on durability...

UPDATE: They do not slip - that is fo sho!  They kind of tug on individual hairs when being removed but that's a small price to pay for keeping my pony or bun from falling during my daily (yeah, right) workouts.

gym bag beauty essentials...

beauty, fitness, guide, hairNavigate with StyleComment
There is nothing more frustrating than finishing a workout (good for you!) then discovering your basic, post exercise needs cannot be met.  Stash these essentials in your gym bag to ensure a stylish* exit from Fitness Planet/World of Workout/insert your gym's cheesy name here.  Again, these are the essentials - if your gym has showers there's a lot more crap you'll need to pack...

* Be they actual face wipes or the baby variety, wipes are essential to removing sweat from face, neck, chest and underarms.  They will help to cool and calm the skin as well as freshen you up a bit before interacting with people who have not just sweat their asses off  to a mambo beat.

* Body mist - a little spritz of a floral or fruity scent is a great follow up, post wipe.  Choose something on the lighter side for a more fresh feeling.
Calgon Body Mist, Hawaiian Ginger, 8 fl oz (236 ml)

* Your face might be a tad flushed so rather than slathering on cosmetics blot your skin to remove excess oil.

* To hydrate your lips as well as add a bit of pretty polish, without bothering with makeup, slick on a lip balm with a bit of color.
Burt's Bees Tinted Lip Balm, Hibiscus, .15-Ounce (Pack of 2)

* Your tresses are more than likely not looking their best at this stage so stash a few hair solutions in your bag such as dry shampoo spray, a few elastics and a headband.

* Let's not forget about the actual bag itself...they tend to get a little funky so toss in a diaper pail deodorizer (see, another benefit to having kids) in the bag to keep it as fresh as possible.  If you store your shoes in the bag invest in a pair of sneaker balls to combat additional odors.
