Friday's Five Favorites...summer brews!

FFF, foodNavigate with StyleComment

"Bet you could use a cool one, Clark."  -Cousin Eddie

Magic Hat #9 - a delicately flavored apricot, not quite pale ale...just what we need on a sweltering day.
note: we could end the list right here as this is our number one, go to beer under any circumstance...BUT this wouldn't be a FFF post if it contained just one rec...

Red Stripe Light - sure, we like plain 'ol Red Stripe but the light iteration is a bit...lighter...and we like that!

Corona - with a wedge of lime, natch.  It may be a bit cliche but it's so light and crisp, inexpensive and so easy to find which makes it a perennial favorite!

Harpoon UFO Hefeweizen - slice up some lemon to serve with this cloudy but light brew.

Goose Island Summertime - a slightly fruity, but certainly not girly, German Style Kolsch beer.

Friday's Five Favorites...ice cream treats!

* Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches (for 140 calories) are amazing...mint is our favorite!  Available nearly everywhere, these treats are a quick and easy way to get your summer ice cream fix without the hefty calories.

* This might grab you as being a tad strange but Black Pepper Ice Cream is all kinds of wonderful...click here for a recipe courtesy of Sassy Radish.

* Dairy Queen Peanut Buster Parfait is our old school pick...and with 710 calories we'll be leaving it behind as a delicious memory...
* No ice cream list would be complete without our friends Ben & Jerry!  The names of their flavors are almost as tasty as the ice cream itself.  When in doubt, order the Chunky Monkey...

* Sorry to be a bit regional here but the best ice cream we've ever had is from Four Seas in Centerville, Massachusetts on Cape Cod.  Everything is made fresh on location and has been since 1934.  Hands down, absolute, no fail pick is the Fresh Peach...or the Peppermint Stick...or the Ginger...just trust that you'll want lick 'em all!

FFF, holidaysNavigate with StyleComment
Below are our favorite things about the Memorial Day weekend:
• extra time with loved ones
• good food...picnics, cookouts, an extra day for a long & lazy brunch (multiple brunches in one weekend is enough reason to celebrate)
• sales galore!
• the "official" kick off to the summer vacation season - yippee!
• last but certainly not least: a day to remember the men & women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country!

HAVE A FABULOUS (and safe) WEEKEND!

Friday's Five Favorites...time wasting websites!

FFF, fun and games, techNavigate with StyleComment
Sometimes you just need to zone out for a few minutes...these websites can help:

Pop Bubble Wrap - a classic, now digitized!

Dear blank, please blank - honestly, one of the best ways to blow off steam without the confrontation...also, super fun to read through other posts (although some are a tad contrived).

Future Me - we've emailed ourselves a description of one of our favorite ensembles du jour for one year, five years and ten years - will be interesting to see how long it takes for us to think said outfit is cool again...?

Totally Looks Like - our fave is the Donatella Versace/Janice the Muppet comparison...spot on!!!

Paula Deen Riding Things - just completely ridic...but the image of Paula riding Gob Bluth like a horse on his Segway made us laugh out loud!

Friday's Five Favorites...charity websites!

NWS strives to be as philanthropic as possible...but we could always do more and we try to remind ourselves how lucky we are on a daily basis.  The below organizations make giving more interactive and thus a part of your life...

Small Can Be Big - This organization gives donors "a more direct, more personal, more local and more shared way to help those in need."  SCBB is Boston based but we're hoping more like minded charities pop up for communities around the globe.  To know 100% of your donation is directly and immediately impacting a struggling family is so gratifying!

Donors Choose - This site connects donors to classrooms across the country in need of funding for school projects.  We all know our nation's schools are in dire need of more support and money and Donors Choose lets you see how your money will impact and shape the student's learning experience.  You'll receive updates on the progress of said project and other various correspondence from the teacher and classroom.

Drop in the Bucket - We first heard of Drop in the Bucket from a close friend who helped to found this organization.  She traveled to Uganda to help build the first few water wells and to shoot video footage to share the story with others.  What she saw was life changing...the fulfillment of one of the most basic needs for sustaining human life for a region used to going without.  Drop in the Bucket is involved in all aspects of funding and building of the wells and have completed an astounding number of projects thus far...but with much work yet to do!

Kiva - Rather than a donation per se, Kiva asks for loans to help fund entrepreneurs around the globe, what they call microfinance.  The borrowers pay the money back to you once their business has been sustained.  This is giving at its finest as it encourages personal and professional growth and helps individuals provide for themselves long term.  Once the original loan has been returned to you, roll it into a new loan for a new borrower and so on...

VDay - Inspired by the stories shared via the Vagina Monologues, Eve Ensler founded VDay, a "global movement to end violence against women and girls."  The website quotes an alarming UN statistic: "one of every three women on the planet will be physically or sexually abused in her lifetime."  Through VDay there are multiple ways to help women and girls across the globe fight against rape, violence and genital mutilation.  Give money, participate in an event or help to organize a local performance of The Vagina Monologues, "the proceeds of which are invested in local anti-violence activities."
